Frequently Asked Questions
What is ZPM?
ZPM is an acronym for Zyvex Performance Materials.
Where are you located?
Our main offices are located in Columbus, Ohio. We also have offices in Richardson, Texas and Rapid City, South Dakota.
What do you do at the Rapid City location?
We have a Nanomaterials Prototyping, Testing and Characterization Facility at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology’s Polymer Processing Center (SDSM&T-PPC).
Is ZPM listed on the NASDAQ?
No. Zyvex Performance Materials is currently a privately held company.
How can I apply for a job?
We have a number of positions available. See our jobs pages for more information.
Can I visit Zyvex Performance Materials?
We are receptive to visits at our main office from professionals and students working in closely related disciplines. However, we have to interrupt other work we’re doing to meet with you, so please give us a clear idea of what you’re working on, and why you think the visit would be mutually beneficial. Please contact us at least two weeks in advance to be sure we’re able to accommodate you.
Can I work temporarily (i.e., on a sabbatical)?
People doing nanotechnology work, or wanting to do so, have inquired about visiting us for an extended period. Write us if you are interested in exploring this further. Presenting a plan of what you’d like to accomplish is highly recommended.
Do you have a summer intern program?
Yes. Contact our Human Resources department via an e-mail. Include your background and some idea of what you’d be interested in doing.
Do you hire post-docs?
Yes. Contact our human resources department via an e-mail. Include your resume, with a proposal of what you’d like to accomplish.
Do you make nanotubes?
ZPM does not make its own nanotubes. We use Arkema for our nanotubes, for both SWNTs and MWNTs.
Can we partner with ZPM?
ZPM works closely with various partners to structure a business relationship based on the needs of our customers. We view our customers as partners, bringing nanotechnology to worldwide markets. If you’re interested in a partnership, please contact us at 614.481.2222
What is unique about ZPM?
ZPM actually designs and manufactures molecules to incorporate nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, into commercial applications. CNTs have exceptional physical properties, but incorporating them into other materials has been inhibited by the surface chemistry of carbon. Problems such as phase separation, aggregation, poor dispersion within a matrix, and poor adhesion to the host must be overcome.
ZPM solved these problems by designing molecules that optimize the interaction between CNTs and the host matrix. These molecules exfoliate, debundle, and allow for uniform dispersion by creating a multi-functional bridge between the CNT sidewalls and the host material.
The underlying technology in ZPM's materials allows us to engineer the properties of the solubilizing agent to suspend nanotubes in a variety of solvents. Additionally, the interaction of the nanotubes with the host material can be designed to achieve a range of properties in the resulting composite material system once the solvent is removed.
